The Power English Project was established at QP in 2002 to develop dynamic, motivating and flexible English language learning materials. The aim was to meet competency-based training needs and the specific cultural and professional requirements of the energy and industry sector in the Gulf.
The result is Power English: Communication for the Energy and Industry Sector, a four-level suite of general English courses, as well as a range of specific short courses, e.g. Radio Communications, Log Writing, Generating Routine Memos and Reading for Reference Purposes. The materials include coursebooks, workbooks, instructor’s guides and audio materials. Work is currently under way to support and extend the materials with multimedia components, including video clips and animated images. Some of the short courses are entirely computer-based.
The Power English vision is to produce a quality English language learning programme that is:
- appropriate to the work-related needs and personal interests of learners,
- effective in increasing learner competence, motivation, confidence and independence,
- dynamic in content and presentation,
- accountable to all stakeholders, and
- flexible in delivery mode, based on an effective blend of teacher-learner interaction and multimedia technology.
